From 2025 onwards, there will be significant changes to European traffic regulations, and if you are a motorhome enthusiast, this news will be of interest to you. The European Union is working on a new directive that will allow drivers with a type B licence (the standard car licence) to drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 4,250 kg. What does this mean for caravanning enthusiasts? More freedom, more options... and more adventure.
The regulations are changing: goodbye to the 3,500 kg limit
Until now, the maximum authorised weight that could be driven with a B licence was 3,500 kg. This greatly limited the type of motorhomes that could be accessed without an additional licence. But that is about to change.
According to the latest legislative developments being prepared in Brussels, vehicles designed for habitation, such as motorhomes, could see that limit raised to 4,250 kg. A long-awaited measure that is expected to come into force in 2025.
For those who have been thinking about taking the leap to a motorhome with more equipment and features, this is great news. And for manufacturers such as Benimar, Benimarit opens up a very interesting opportunity to continue innovating.
Why is this change so significant?
Because more weight means more comfort. By removing the 3,500 kg barrier, manufacturers will be able to design vehicles with:
- More clean water and waste capacity.
- More comprehensive equipment: large refrigerators, more powerful heating, solar panels, lithium batteries...
- Better insulation for year-round travel.
- Space for accessories such as motorcycle or electric bike racks.
In addition, this new regulation will boost the development of electric motorhomes,a segment that is beginning to take off and requires a heavier structure due to the weight of the batteries.
Who benefits from this regulation?
Everyone who has held a type B driving licence for at least two years. That is, according to what is known so far, the condition for being able to drive vehicles weighing more than 3,500 kg without needing a C1 licence.
In other words, thousands of users who are currently limited to lighter models will be able to drive more comprehensive vehicles without having to go through additional procedures.
Here at Benimar, for years, Benimar, we have been committed to making the world of caravanning accessible, practical and comfortable. This change is fully in line with our vision: for more people to enjoy the freedom of travelling with their house in tow, hassle-free.
And what about parking and traffic?
A recurring question among motorhome owners is whether these new measures will bring about changes in parking, overnight stays or access restrictions. For now, the answer is no.
The legislative change focuses on the Total vektnot on conditions of use. Therefore:
- Parking is not camping,as long as you do not put up awnings, use supports or empty liquids outside.
- Spending the night (sleeping inside a properly parked vehicle) remains legal in most municipalities, provided that local regulations are respected.
- Access restrictions based on weight or height will continue to depend on each local council or autonomous community.
To summarise: the freedom to travel in a motorhome remains unchanged, but has improved.
What about camper vans?
There are still more questions here. The new regulation does not specifically mention camper vans, which leaves this type of vehicle in a somewhat grey area. Groups representing these users have called for greater clarity in the legislation, but so far there has been no progress in this regard.
What's next: a future with more freedom to travel
With these new regulations on the horizon, an exciting new era is dawning for motorhome enthusiasts. At Benimar Benimar we are already working on developing more comprehensive, efficient and sustainable models, ready to take full advantage of this new legal reality.
If you are thinking of taking the plunge or renewing your motorhome in the coming months, this could be the perfect time. From 2025 onwards, larger motorhomes will be within the reach of many more drivers, without the need for additional licences.
Are you ready to discover a new way of travelling, without limits and with all creature comforts on board?
